What does the Luhn check actually prove?

Only that the number is internally consistent, that the last digit (the check digit) matches what the algorithm computes from the rest. It does **not** prove the card exists, is in good standing, has funds, or is owned by the person typing it. Luhn catches typos (single-digit errors, most adjacent transpositions) at the form level so you don't waste a network call. The real validation happens at the payment processor.

Why use it then?

Form-level UX. Rejecting a clearly invalid card number locally is faster, cheaper, and friendlier than sending it to the processor and getting back 'invalid number'. Every payment form (Stripe Elements, Braintree Hosted Fields, etc.) does Luhn validation client-side before they accept the submit. It's also useful for generating test cards, detecting which network a card belongs to so you can show the right logo, and validating large card lists for fraud-pattern analysis without making API calls.

How is the card type detected?

By the BIN, the first 6-8 digits. Visa always starts with 4; Mastercard with 51-55 or 2221-2720 (newer range, added 2017); Amex with 34 or 37; Discover with 6011 or 65; JCB with 35; Diners Club with 300-305, 36, or 38; UnionPay with 62. The tool checks the prefix against these ranges and returns the network. For full BIN data (issuing bank, country, debit/credit/prepaid) you need a BIN database, which is out of scope here.

Can I use this to generate valid-looking test card numbers?

The algorithm is well-known and reversible: pick any 15 digits, compute the check digit, append. That said, payment processors maintain explicit test-card lists (Stripe's `4242 4242 4242 4242`, etc.) that pass Luhn AND route to the test environment. Use those for integration testing, they're guaranteed to work in sandboxes and won't accidentally match a real card.

Is it safe to enter a real card number?

Don't. Even though the validation runs in your browser (zero outbound requests), entering real card numbers into any web form trains bad habits, and you may not be on this tool's page next time, when the page actually is malicious. Use test numbers: `4242 4242 4242 4242` (Stripe test Visa), `5555 5555 5555 4444` (Mastercard), `3782 822463 10005` (Amex).

No. The Luhn algorithm is a few lines of JavaScript; BIN detection is a small in-page lookup table. Both run locally. Open DevTools Network during a validation: zero outbound requests.
